Man Up Pintrest

In order to rank on Google, you need to build up links from other sites to yours. This means getting involved in every social network on the planet – facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, etc. I got an invite to Pintrest and created an account, but the interface wasn’t very intuitive and I moved on to other sites. Earlier this week, I was stuck on linking ideas and decided to give Pintrest another look. I have two problems with pintrest. First, it could be more intuitive. Second, the site is dominated by women.
Making Pintrest work
Once you understand how it works, its pretty simple. Maybe I just think differently, but it took me about an hour to learn how to use Pintrest properly. These steps break it down, if you need the Cliff Notes version.
- Create Boards -Once you login, click add in the top right, and a new window will pop up. Choose create board and then choose your settings for the board. It is a good idea to setup five to ten boards so you can engage a variety of topics. A few of the topics I chose are – CISSP, PMP, Media, Books, etc.
- Add Pins – Click add again, add a pin, and clip in pages from the internet about your interests. Pintrest will only let you add a pin, if the link has an image. If you are using Zemanta, your blog should have one or two images per post.
- Add Likes – Do a search in the top left on things you are interested in and click like or repin on the images. The repin option will let you move the pin to one of your boards.
- Follow – If you like someone’s pins you can follow them. You can also add friends by clicking your icon in the top right corner and chosing find or invite friends.
- Incremental Progress – If you spend a few minutes a week updating your pages and following back, you can build up some followers. It works the same as any other social network.
It’s a woman’s world!
Once you start looking around in Pintrest, it is obvious it is dominated by women. The

entire front page is either clothing, hunky guys, animals or cute sayings. I don’t have a problem with so many women online. I think it great, but I would feel more comfortable with a little more male representation.

Pintrest needs more men! I would like to see some male oriented content make it to the front page – cars, superheroes, zombies (yes, we own that), and technology.
