Nexus 7 Impresses

You could say I am an Apple fan. I bought a powerbook G4 and I have been happily buying Apple products ever since – macbook pro Core Duo, ipod touch, two ipads and last week I bought a macbook air.  I haven’t paid much attention to Android phones or tablets, because I was very happy with my Apple products.  However, My mother came to visit and brought her brand new Nexus 7 with her and asked me to help set it up.  I was really impressed with the Nexus 7 and here are the reasons why.

Nexus 7 Size and Price

Steve Jobs didn’t like the idea of a 7 inch ipad.  While the ipad is bigger and more expensive.  The Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD are 7″ and about $200 or $300 less than an Ipad.  The Kindle has been successful in the tablet space, I believe for these two reasons. The Nexus is clearly aimed at competing on price and size.  Many analysts predict an ipad to start competing in the space.

Nexus 7 Hardware

The Nexus has very solid technical specs for the form factor.  Mashable compared the technical specs.  I can tell you from the brief time I spent with it, the Nexus felt very responsive.

Nexus 7 Android Interface

My brother-in-law seems to be anti-apple and he has been pushing me to get an Android phone.  The couple of phones he has showed me didn’t impress me.  It seemed like a rip off of the ipad interface.  I am not sure if I didn’t look closely enough or its the Jellybean upgrade, but I really liked the way the interface flows on the Nexus 7.  It is very intuitive.
Having just bought a new macbook air, its harder to justify a Nexus 7 purchase.  However, I do rely on a few other devices.  I have a long commute to work and I have an ipod and old GPS.

My Rationalization for the Purchase

I did some research and the Nexus 7 can act as a gps, replace my ipod and maybe a bit more. I found “Transform your Nexus 7 into a car tech powerhouse” by Antuan Goodman.  I can carry around one less device and it should be able to do more.  The only thing that may change my mind is a Apple ipad mini in a 7 inch form factor that competes on price.  Apple should be worried and developing a ipad mini.
